Vocabulary learning in a foreign language: multimedia input, sentence-writing task, and their combination

Abstract This article examines the effects of task conditions (i.e., with and without a sentence-writing task), multimedia input (definition only, definition + information, information videos), combinations these two variables on learning gains new words. study involved 2 × 3 research design. In total, 235 Chinese EFL learners were allocated to six conditions. Vocabulary outcomes measured by pre- post-tests 24 target items. The results showed that videos group scored significantly higher than definition-only groups. Additionally, increased effectiveness vocabulary versus condition this task. combination was identified as most effective technique for lexical highlighted combining learn Relevant teaching theoretical implications also discussed.
